The Collecting Bug

Posted by Jeffrey Wilson on May 8th 2018

Sports cards, what is it about them that draws our attention as collectors? Is it the pictures on the front? Is it the stats and info about our favorite players on the back? Is it the design of them, especially with the modern inserts of today? Any one of these answers would work well. For me personally, I feel like I'm holding a piece of history in my hands!

There's nothing like holding that 1968 Topps Nolan Ryan rookie card in your hands for the first time, understanding what players like him have meant to the sports world. However, most collectors have never owned a Nolan Ryan rookie card. Rather, they collect other players like childhood and hometown heroes.

I never will forget growing up in Massachusetts watching the 2003 Boston Red Sox, my favorite baseball team. As many of you well know, the Sox did not win the World Series that year, but being a 12-year-old kid I wanted all things Red Sox. I asked my dad to bring home the paper every day so I could see who won the games during the season(we didn't have internet back then). A few years prior to ‘03 my dad had bought me a box of cards from all the major sports. The first card I ever remember pulling from a pack was a 1995 Topps John Valentin card. Love for that card was a catalyst for feeding my love of collecting and the Sox. For my buddy Chris, the first packs of cards he ever opened were 1980 Topps football. Growing up a die-hard Cowboys fan, he remembers the first Cowboy he pulled from a pack. It was a 1980 Topps Tony Hill. After that, the rest was history.

We all have different stories to tell, but one thing is for certain. You are on this site, because you or someone you know fell in love with the joy of collecting. This website is a place where people can fuel their passion for sports and hopefully pass that passion on to others. We hope you enjoy your experience at the Sports Page Cards and we look forward to helping you build your collections and memories.
